Most homeowners assume a stopped drum means a new machine or an expensive control board. Motor running, drum completely still? Belt. Motor humming but nothing moving? Capacitor. Rhythmic thumping before it stopped? Rollers. Grinding through the whole cycle? Drum glides or rear bearing. The sound tells us the component before we open the machine.
Replacing the wrong component first is how a $90 repair becomes a $400 job. A motor that hums but won’t spin is almost never a failed motor — it’s almost always a failed capacitor. What the Sound Tells Us — Before We Touch a Single Part
Each cause of a stopped or struggling drum makes a different sound — or a telling silence. Here is what each one sounds like and what it means.
Motor Running, Drum Completely Still and Silent — Belt
Motor audibly running, drum completely stationary with no vibration or attempt at rotation — the drive belt has snapped. The belt wraps around the outside of the drum and connects to the motor through the idler pulley. When it breaks, the motor keeps running but has nothing to pull. We carry belts for all major brands on every call. Most belt replacements are completed in under an hour. We always inspect rollers and the idler pulley at the same time — a worn belt that snapped often did so partly because degraded rollers were adding extra drag.
Motor Hums But Drum Won’t Move — Capacitor
The dryer hums when you press start but the drum does not rotate. Not a belt issue — the motor is clearly trying to run. The motor is attempting to start but cannot develop enough torque to get the drum moving. Almost always a failed motor start capacitor. The capacitor gives the motor the initial electrical kick it needs. When it fails, the motor hums at line frequency but cannot overcome the drum’s inertia. This is frequently misdiagnosed as a motor failure — which costs far more. We test the capacitor first on every hum-with-no-rotation call. In Pensacola’s summer heat, capacitor failures happen at a higher rate than cooler climates.
Rhythmic Thumping Once Per Rotation — Drum Support Rollers
The drum is spinning but thumping exactly once per drum rotation — almost always flat-spotted drum support rollers. When the machine sits unused for an extended period — common in military rental properties in Pace and Warrington, in seasonal homes on Pensacola Beach and Gulf Breeze — the rollers develop flat spots where the drum rested. In Pensacola’s humid environment, the roller material compresses faster than in drier climates. Left alone, flat-spotted rollers degrade further until the drum stops or the additional drag snaps the belt. Thumping is a warning — address it before it becomes a stopped drum.
Squealing That Worsens as the Machine Warms Up — Idler Pulley
A high-pitched squeal during drum rotation, especially one that increases in pitch as the machine warms up — the idler pulley bearing is worn. The idler pulley keeps tension on the drive belt. When its bearing dries out or wears, it squeals. The squeal escalates over time to grinding, then the bearing seizes — either snapping the belt or locking the drum. It is a much easier and less expensive repair at the squealing stage than at the seized stage. We replace the idler pulley whenever we replace the belt, because the additional belt tension from a worn idler is a primary cause of premature belt failure.
Constant Grinding or Scraping — Drum Glides or Rear Bearing
A grinding or scraping sound during drum rotation that is constant rather than rhythmic — the drum is making contact with something it should not be touching. Either the drum glides (small plastic pads supporting the front edge of the drum) have worn through entirely, or the rear drum bearing has failed. Drum glides are inexpensive parts. When they wear through, the front edge of the drum drops slightly and scrapes against the front bulkhead. We replace glides as a set — if one has worn through, the others are close behind. Rear bearing failure produces a similar but louder sound with more vibration.
Drum Starts Fine Then Stops Mid-Load — Thermal Overload or Door Switch
The drum starts and runs for 15 to 20 minutes, then stops with the cycle still running. The motor has an internal thermal protector that cuts power if it overheats. This happens most often when the vent is restricted — the motor runs hotter than designed because exhaust heat cannot exit properly. The motor cuts out, cools down, resets, and runs again until it overheats again. A failing door switch can also cause mid-cycle stops if vibration momentarily triggers it into the open position. We check airflow at the vent cap and test the door switch before we open the motor compartment on every mid-cycle stop call.

Summer Heat and Motor Capacitors
Pensacola sits in one of the highest average temperature zones in the continental United States. Motor start capacitors are temperature-sensitive — sustained heat above their rated range accelerates degradation of the capacitor’s dielectric material. Flat-Spotted Rollers in Military and Seasonal Properties

A machine that sits unused for two, three, or four months develops roller flat spots — the drum rests in one position for weeks. In Pensacola’s humid environment, the roller material compresses and deforms at the contact point faster than it would in a dry climate. Belt Wear in High-Use Rental Machines
Rental properties — especially in the Pace and Ferry Pass corridors where rental density is high — often have dryers that have run continuous loads for years without maintenance. A bearing that would last eight years inland may show accelerated wear at five years on a waterfront property. Belt Snapped — And the Rollers Had Been Telling the Story for Months
A homeowner in Ferry Pass called about a Maytag top-load dryer that had stopped tumbling during a load. Motor running, drum completely stationary. Classic belt failure. Drum Stopped Mid-Load — Motor Thermal Overload, No Parts Needed
A military family renting in Pace called about an LG electric dryer that started fine, ran for about twenty minutes, and stopped tumbling with the cycle still running. Heat still on, drum stationary. Opened and closed the door — drum started again. Twenty minutes later, same thing.
Starts, runs, stops mid-cycle, restarts after a pause — motor thermal overload on the internal protector. Before opening anything we went to the exterior vent cap. The flex transition duct at the back of the machine was crushed where the dryer had been pushed against the wall — a full 90-degree kink that reduced airflow to almost nothing. We corrected the transition duct routing and ran the machine through a full 45-minute cycle. Drum ran continuously from start to finish. Motor thermal overload resolved without replacing the motor, capacitor, or any electrical component.
A drum that stops mid-cycle and restarts after cooling is almost always thermal overload, and thermal overload is almost always a vent restriction. Check the vent — including the transition duct behind the machine — before opening the motor compartment.
