Some dryer problems require methodical testing to narrow down. A noise call is different. The sound is diagnostic information — and if you can describe what you are hearing, when it happens, and whether it changes as the drum warms up, we can usually tell you the likely cause before we even pull up in your driveway.
The diagnostic sequence on a noise call starts by running the machine and listening from different positions, at different points in the cycle, with the door open and with it closed. The sound profile changes as the machine warms up. It changes under a loaded drum versus an empty one. These variations narrow the cause before we touch a single fastener.

A high-pitched squeal during drum rotation — especially one that gets worse as the machine warms up from a cold start — is the idler pulley bearing. The idler pulley keeps the drive belt under tension. When its bearing dries out, the pulley spins against the belt with increasing friction. The squeal starts intermittently, escalates over weeks to something consistent, then the bearing seizes entirely — taking the belt with it.
Pensacola-specific: utility rooms without adequate ventilation regularly exceed 95°F in summer. Bearing lubrication degrades faster at elevated temperatures. We see idler pulley failures here at a higher rate than in cooler markets. We replace the belt whenever we replace the idler pulley — always — because the additional drag from a worn pulley is a primary cause of premature belt failure.
A squealing pulley addressed early is a one-component repair. A seized pulley that has snapped the belt is a longer visit. Six to ten weeks is a typical window between first squeal and seized bearing.
Rhythmic Thumping — Flat-Spotted Drum Support Rollers
A thump that arrives exactly once per drum rotation — consistent, rhythmic, predictable — is flat-spotted drum support rollers. When the machine sits unused for an extended period, the drum rests in one position and the rollers develop a flat spot at the contact point. When the machine runs, the flat spot produces one thump per revolution.
This is one of the most Pensacola-specific patterns we encounter. Almost always drum glides worn entirely through. Drum glides are small pads that support the front edge of the drum. When they wear through, the metal drum edge contacts the metal bulkhead directly.
The repair is straightforward when caught early — a clean glide replacement. Every week the machine runs with metal-on-metal contact, the drum lip and bulkhead face score more deeply. A grinding dryer caught late may also involve scored surfaces that affect long-term machine performance even after new glides are installed. Do not keep running it.
Running a grinding dryer is running a dryer that is progressively damaging its own contact surfaces. What might be a drum glide replacement becomes more complicated with every additional load run.
Rattling or Rumbling — Foreign Object or Rear Drum Bearing
A rattling with an irregular rhythm that doesn’t match the drum’s rotation rate is most often a foreign object inside the drum — coins, screws, metal buttons, underwire from a bra. The object rolls around and contacts the drum wall at irregular intervals. On most machines this can be resolved by removing the front panel and retrieving the object without full disassembly.
A deeper, consistent rumbling that is tied to drum rotation speed — not irregular — points to the rear drum bearing. This is a more involved repair than drum glides but still well within the range where repair makes sense on most machines. We isolate the cause by disconnecting the drum belt and running the motor in isolation to separate motor noise from drum assembly noise.
Thumping at Start Then Settling — Load Imbalance
A heavy thump when the drum first starts rotating, settling to normal after a few rotations — almost always a load balance issue. Too heavy a load for the drum to start smoothly, or items shifted into an unbalanced position during the wash cycle. Thick towels, denim, a single heavy duvet running alone. This is not a mechanical failure. It is a usage pattern.
If the same thumping-at-start pattern appears on normal-sized loads of regular clothing, that points back to roller flat-spotting — not load imbalance. The distinction is whether the thumping is load-dependent or present regardless of what is in the drum.
Noise Only Sometimes — The Intermittent Phase Is the Warning
Intermittent noise — present some mornings, gone others — is the early stage of bearing failure. The idler pulley bearing is failing gradually. On colder mornings or after the machine has been sitting, the bearing is less lubricated and the squeal appears. As it warms up, it may disappear.
