How to Tell If Your Dryer Belt Is Broken β Before You Call Anyone
What a Broken Belt Looks Like From the Outside
When the drive belt snaps, the motor continues to run β you can hear it humming or running at speed β but the drum does not rotate. The machine may run through an entire timed cycle, generating heat and motor noise, while the clothes sit completely stationary inside. On some machines the display counts down normally. On others a sensor detects no drum rotation and triggers an error. But the common thread is clear: motor runs, drum does not move.
The Hand Test β Confirm a Broken Belt in 30 Seconds
Open the dryer door. Reach inside and try to rotate the drum by hand.
With a broken belt, the drum spins freely with almost no resistance. You can rotate it with two fingers. There is essentially no force required because the drum is mechanically disconnected from the drive system β the belt that connected it to the motor is no longer intact.
With an intact belt, you will feel clear resistance when you try to rotate the drum. The belt, wrapped around the drum and held under tension by the idler pulley, creates meaningful mechanical resistance. You can still turn the drum manually, but it takes effort.
This is the most reliable pre-diagnosis test available. If the drum spins freely with no resistance while the motor is silent (machine off), the belt is almost certainly broken. If there is clear resistance, the belt is intact and the cause of the drum stoppage is something else β most likely a seized idler pulley or a failed start capacitor.
Other Signs That Point to a Broken Belt
A Loud Snap or Bang Before the Drum Stopped
When a drive belt fails completely, it sometimes does so with an audible snap β a sharp bang that comes from inside the machine. If you heard this sound immediately before the drum stopped rotating, a snapped belt is the most likely cause. Belts do not always snap audibly β many fail with a gradual fray that produces no dramatic sound β but an audible snap followed by a stationary drum is a strong indicator.
Squealing or Slipping in the Weeks Before Failure
A belt that has been wearing gradually often gives warning before it fails completely. Intermittent squealing during the early part of a cycle β particularly when the drum is cold and the belt is less flexible β can indicate belt wear or a worn idler pulley stressing the belt. A drum that hesitates or briefly slips under a heavy load before continuing is another sign that the belt tension has reduced.
If the machine was making these sounds and the drum has now stopped completely, the belt failure was preceded by a warning period that the machine communicated clearly.
The Machine Is Over Eight Years Old
Drive belts have a typical service life of eight to twelve years under normal use. A machine that is in its second decade and whose drum has stopped may have simply reached the end of the belt’s designed service life. Age alone is not a diagnosis, but it is strong supporting context β particularly when combined with the drum-spins-freely result from the hand test.
What a Broken Belt Does NOT Look Like
A broken belt does not produce:
- A machine that does not respond at all when start is pressed β that is a door switch, power supply, or control board issue
- A machine with no heat but a rotating drum β that is a thermal fuse, heating element, or gas igniter issue
- A machine that hums and then trips off repeatedly β that is a start capacitor issue
- A machine that grinds or scrapes during drum rotation β that is a drum glide or bearing issue (the drum is still rotating)
The broken belt symptom is specifically: motor runs, drum does not rotate, drum spins freely by hand. That combination points clearly to the belt and away from everything else.
Is the Belt the Only Thing That Needs Replacing?
When we replace a broken drive belt, we always replace the idler pulley at the same time. The idler pulley is the small wheel that keeps the belt under tension. A worn idler pulley bearing is the most common cause of premature belt failure β the uneven tension and friction on a worn pulley stresses the belt at the contact point. If the pulley was worn when the belt broke, a new belt on the same worn pulley will fail again within a year or two.
Replacing both at the same time adds minimal cost and prevents a repeat failure. While the machine is open we also inspect the drum support rollers, drum glides, and drum bearing β components that age alongside the belt and benefit from assessment on the same visit.
How Long Does a Belt Replacement Take?
On most residential dryers, a belt replacement requires partial disassembly β removing the front panel or the top and front panel depending on the machine configuration β to access the drum and belt assembly. The process typically takes 45 minutes to an hour for a technician familiar with the specific machine configuration. Parts are carried on the service truck for all major brands. Most belt replacements are completed in a single visit.
The hand test β open the door, try to spin the drum, feel for resistance β is the most reliable way to identify a broken belt without any tools or technical knowledge.
