- The dryer runs hot from vent restriction β elevated temperatures inside the machine accelerate rubber degradation. A belt on a machine that has been running with a restricted vent β hotter than designed on every cycle β will fail sooner than one on a machine with clean, unobstructed airflow.
- The machine operates in high-temperature environments β laundry closets without ventilation in hot climates compound the thermal stress on the belt in the same way vent restriction does.
Warning Signs β What a Failing Belt Sounds Like and Feels Like
A drive belt does not usually fail without warning. In the weeks or months before it snaps, most belts give detectable signals that something is changing in the drive system.
Squealing or Chirping During Operation
A belt that is beginning to fray or harden at the edges sometimes produces a squealing or chirping sound during drum rotation β particularly during the first few minutes of a cycle when the belt is cold and less flexible. This sound is easy to confuse with an idler pulley bearing squeal, and the two failures are related β a squealing idler pulley accelerates belt wear, and a deteriorating belt can produce its own squeal at the drum contact points.
Thumping or Slapping During Operation
A belt that has developed a stiff section β from hardened rubber at a wear point β can produce a rhythmic thump as the stiff section passes around the drum. This is distinct from the thump of flat-spotted drum rollers because the timing is tied to the belt’s full rotation cycle rather than the drum’s rotation rate.
Intermittent Drum Slipping or Hesitation
A belt that has lost significant tension β from stretching or partial fraying β may slip on the drum or motor pulley under load. The drum may hesitate, slow, or briefly stop during a heavy load before resuming β as if the motor is having trouble maintaining rotation. This intermittent slip is a late-stage warning sign that the belt is close to failure.
When the Belt Snaps β What Happens
A snapped drive belt produces an immediate and complete drum stop. The motor continues to run β you can hear it humming β but the drum does not move. The machine will often complete a timed cycle (heat on, motor running, timer counting down) while producing no actual drying, because the drum is stationary and the clothes are not tumbling.
You can confirm a broken belt without opening the machine: open the dryer door and try to spin the drum by hand. With a broken belt, the drum rotates freely with almost no resistance β it is disconnected from the drive system. Should You Replace Just the Belt, or the Belt and Pulley Together?

Replacing the belt without replacing a worn idler pulley is setting up the new belt to fail in the same way, often within a year or two. The cost difference between replacing both components and replacing just the belt is small. The time difference is minimal β the machine is already disassembled. Do both.
While the machine is open, it is also worth inspecting the drum support rollers. Rollers and belts age together β a machine that has run long enough to need a belt replacement has typically also run long enough that the rollers warrant inspection. If the rollers show significant wear, replacing them on the same visit avoids a second disassembly job within a year.
