How to Clean Dryer Moisture Sensor Strips β A Five-Minute Fix for Damp Clothes
What a Dryer Moisture Sensor Does
Modern dryers do not simply run for a set time and stop. They use a moisture sensor to detect when the clothes are actually dry, then end the cycle automatically. The sensor consists of two thin metal strips β usually stainless steel β positioned inside the drum near the lint filter opening. As clothes tumble past these strips, the moisture in the fabric conducts a small electrical current between them. The control board monitors this current. When the current drops to zero β indicating the fabric is dry β the board signals the machine to end the cycle.
This system is more efficient than a timed dry because it ends the cycle when the clothes are actually dry rather than at a predetermined time. But it introduces a specific failure mode: if the sensor strips cannot accurately measure conductivity, they cannot accurately detect dryness.
Why Sensor Strips Get Coated
Dryer sheets contain fabric softener β a waxy substance that transfers from the sheet to the clothes and from the clothes to everything the clothes contact inside the drum, including the moisture sensor strips. Over time, repeated use of dryer sheets deposits a thin but increasing layer of waxy residue on the metal strip surfaces.
This residue is electrically insulating. It prevents the small electrical current from passing between the strips correctly. The control board reads a lower-than-actual conductivity, interprets the drum as drier than it is, and ends the cycle early β leaving clothes that are still damp.
The buildup is gradual. A dryer that has been used with dryer sheets for years may have developed a significant coating. In rental properties with multiple consecutive tenancies of heavy dryer sheet users, the accumulation can be substantial enough to cause damp-clothes complaints from the first week a new tenant moves in.
How to Find the Moisture Sensor Strips
On most dryers the moisture sensor strips are located inside the drum, near the front opening, in the area just inside the door when it is open. Look for two parallel metal strips or bars, usually about 1 to 2 inches long, positioned on the front bulkhead (the inside of the front panel) or on the drum itself near the lint filter housing. On Samsung and LG front-loaders, the strips are typically on the lower front bulkhead, just above the lint filter slot. On Whirlpool top-loaders and some GE machines, they may be positioned on the drum surface itself or near the door opening.
If you cannot locate them visually, search your specific model number with “moisture sensor location” β this is a well-documented detail for all major brands and the information is readily available.
How to Clean the Sensor Strips
The cleaning process requires no tools and takes under five minutes:
- Open the dryer door and locate the two moisture sensor strips.
- Dampen a cotton ball or soft cloth with isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol). Any concentration will work β 70% or 91% are both fine.
- Rub each strip firmly along its full length with the dampened cotton ball. You may see discolouration on the cotton as the residue transfers β this is normal and confirms the coating was present.
- Use a fresh dry cotton ball or cloth to wipe the strips clean of any remaining alcohol.
- Allow the strips to dry completely before running the dryer β typically a minute or two at room temperature.
- Run a test load of damp laundry and observe whether the cycle completes correctly with dry clothes.
In most cases where a coated sensor was the cause, one cleaning resolves the symptom completely. In cases where the coating has been building for years, a second cleaning a week later may improve performance further as any deeper residue becomes accessible.
Preventing Recurrence
The only cause of sensor strip coating is dryer sheet use. The most direct prevention is switching from dryer sheets to liquid fabric softener added at the washer, or eliminating fabric softener from dryer loads entirely. Wool dryer balls are a popular alternative that reduces static without any chemical residue.
If dryer sheets are preferred, cleaning the sensor strips every three to six months prevents the coating from accumulating to the point where it affects cycle performance.
When Cleaning Does Not Fix It
If cleaning the sensor strips does not resolve the damp-clothes symptom, the cause is something else. At that point the diagnostic sequence moves to:
- Vent system check β restricted airflow is the most common cause of damp clothes when the sensor is not the issue
- Heating element or igniter test β a partially failed heating element produces some heat but not enough to dry efficiently
- Cycling thermostat β a thermostat calibrated slightly low produces a machine that runs cooler than designed
- Control board β on some models, a failing board can produce inconsistent sensor readings regardless of strip condition
The sensor strip cleaning is always worth doing first because it is free, takes five minutes, and resolves the symptom in a significant proportion of damp-clothes calls β particularly on Samsung and LG machines in households or rental properties with heavy dryer sheet use.
Damp clothes after a full cycle on a sensor-equipped dryer is very frequently a coated moisture sensor, not a mechanical failure. Five minutes and a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol resolves it at no cost. Check this before calling anyone β and definitely before anyone quotes you a new machine or a control board.
