The repair decision on a ten-year-old machine should never be made in isolation. A technician who replaces the broken component and leaves without assessing the machine’s overall condition is not giving you the information you need.

- Calculate the true replacement cost including delivery, installation, and haul-away
- Apply the 50% rule to those two numbers
- Factor in the brand, overall condition, and maintenance history
Under 40% of true replacement cost on a decent-quality machine in good condition: repair confidently. Between 40β60%: brand, condition, and personal tolerance for the next failure inform the decision.
