What the Door Switch Does
The door switch is a small electrical interlock that prevents the dryer from running with the door open. When the door closes, a plunger on the door frame presses against the switch body, completing the circuit that allows the dryer to run. When the switch fails in the open position — the most common failure mode — the dryer believes the door is always open. The machine will not start regardless of whether the door is physically shut.
How the Door Switch Fails

Over time the internal spring fatigues, the plunger wears down, and the switch contacts corrode through repeated operation. Open the dryer door and locate the switch — a small button or plunger in the door frame area. Press the switch plunger firmly with your finger while simultaneously pressing start. If the dryer starts, the switch is the problem — the door is not engaging it reliably when it closes. This test takes thirty seconds and requires no tools.

A dryer that will not start has several possible causes — door switch, start button, thermal fuse (on some models), or control board.
