Dryer Hums But Won’t Spin β€” What That Sound Means and What to Do

You press start. The motor hums β€” clearly audible. But the drum sits completely still. This specific failure pattern β€” motor running, drum stationary β€” is one of the most diagnostically useful symptoms a dryer can produce. It narrows the cause to a very short list, almost all of which are straightforward repairs.

Why the Hum-With-No-Spin Pattern Is So Diagnostic

The hum tells you something important: the motor has not failed, power is reaching the machine, the start circuit is functioning, and the thermal fuse is intact. All of these are ruled out by the hum alone. The problem lies between the motor and the drum β€” in the mechanical drive system that connects them.

On a residential dryer, the motor drives the drum through a belt-and-pulley system. The drive belt wraps around the drum and connects to the motor via the idler pulley. When the drum sits still while the motor runs, something in that chain has failed.

The Four Most Likely Causes

1. Broken Drive Belt β€” The Most Common Cause

A snapped drive belt is the most common cause. The belt is a long loop of reinforced rubber that wraps around the full circumference of the drum and connects to the motor via the idler pulley. When it snaps, the motor spins freely β€” producing the hum β€” but nothing connected to it rotates.

You can often confirm a broken belt without opening the machine. Open the door and try to spin the drum by hand. With a broken belt, the drum rotates freely with almost no resistance β€” it is disconnected from the drive system. With an intact belt, there is noticeable resistance. If the drum spins freely by hand, the belt is broken.

Drive belts typically last eight to twelve years. They fail earlier on machines with a worn idler pulley β€” the additional friction and uneven tension accelerates belt wear significantly. We always replace the idler pulley when replacing a belt, because the two failures are directly related.

2. Seized Idler Pulley

When the idler pulley’s bearing seizes completely, the belt can no longer move around it. The motor hums, the belt is intact, but the locked pulley creates a mechanical block preventing drum rotation. A fully seized pulley sometimes snaps the belt simultaneously β€” the sudden lock creates a tension spike that exceeds the belt’s rated strength.

If the machine was squealing intermittently in the weeks before the drum stopped, the idler pulley bearing was giving its warning. The squeal is the bearing failing gradually. The lock-up is what happens when it completes.

3. Failed Start Capacitor

The start capacitor provides the electrical kick to get the motor rotating from rest. When it fails, the motor cannot generate enough starting torque. The motor hums β€” the run winding is energised β€” but the drum does not rotate. This failure produces a distinctive pattern: the motor hums and then trips off after a few seconds, repeating two or three times before the thermal overload locks it out.

On some machines, manually spinning the drum while pressing start will get it going β€” the manual rotation overcomes the starting torque deficit the capacitor would normally provide. This confirms the capacitor, not the motor, has failed.

4. Seized Rear Drum Bearing

The rear drum bearing supports the back of the drum. When it seizes, the drum is mechanically locked from the rear. This is less common than a belt or pulley issue but produces the same symptom. A seized bearing is typically preceded by weeks of grinding or rumbling β€” unlike a belt failure, which can happen suddenly with no warning.
