Dryer Heats on the First Cycle But Not the Second — What That Pattern Actually Means

Most dryer heat failures are all-or-nothing. The machine either heats or it doesn’t. But there is a specific failure pattern that confuses a lot of homeowners and leads to misdiagnosis more often than almost anything else we see.

The dryer heats on the first load of the day. The clothes come out dry, or mostly dry. You load it a second time. Cold air. The third cycle is cold too. By the time you call us, the machine isn’t heating at all.

This pattern is not random. It is not a fluke. And it is not going to resolve itself. It is one of the clearest diagnostic signatures in dryer repair, and it almost always points to the same root cause.

On Gas Dryers: This Is Classic Igniter Failure

On a gas dryer, this specific pattern — heats once, cold on subsequent cycles — is almost always a failing igniter.

Here is what is happening inside the machine: the igniter’s job is to glow hot enough to light the gas burner at the start of each heat cycle. A healthy igniter does this reliably every time the thermostat calls for heat. A failing igniter can still draw enough current to glow and light the burner once — but after that initial firing, it has degraded enough that it cannot reach ignition temperature again on subsequent calls.

So the first load gets heat because the igniter works once. Every load after that gets cold air because the igniter cannot light the burner again until the machine has been off long enough for something to partially recover — except it does not actually recover, and eventually the first cycle stops heating too.

The igniter does not fail all at once. It degrades. The pattern of intermittent heating on first-cycle-only is the degradation phase. Ignoring it means waiting for the point where the first cycle stops heating as well.

The fix: Replace the igniter. We also replace the gas valve coils at the same time when they are original to the machine or showing degraded resistance values — a machine that already needed an igniter and has original coils is a machine where the coils are not far behind. Replacing them together costs modestly more but eliminates the return call.

On Electric Dryers: It Is Usually the Cycling Thermostat

The same first-cycle-only heating pattern on an electric dryer points in a different direction: the cycling thermostat.

The cycling thermostat regulates drum temperature by switching the heating element on and off throughout the cycle. On the first cycle, the thermostat may be functioning well enough to allow the element to heat initially. But as the machine warms up and the thermostat is called to cycle repeatedly, its intermittent failure becomes apparent. By the second cycle, it is not reliably closing the circuit, and the element does not heat.

This is a subtler failure than a blown thermal fuse. The machine does not shut down completely — it just stops heating after the first use. It can run this way for days or weeks before the first-cycle heat disappears too.

A failed cycling thermostat also has a related risk: if it fails in a way that leaves the heating element running without cycling off, the machine overheats, the thermal fuse blows, and now you have two failed components instead of one. This is why intermittent symptoms like first-cycle-only heating are worth addressing promptly rather than running the machine until it stops entirely.

Could It Be the Vent?

Yes, and this is worth considering alongside the component failure.

A partially restricted vent can produce a version of this pattern on both gas and electric dryers. On the first cycle, the duct restriction is manageable enough that the machine runs and heats adequately. As the cycle progresses, temperatures in the duct rise. By the second cycle, the machine is starting from a thermally elevated state, and the restriction causes it to overheat faster. The thermal safety system cuts the heat.

The difference from a component failure is usually in the airflow — a machine with a vent restriction will often have noticeably weak exhaust at the exterior cap, and the clothes from the first cycle will be hot but not fully dry. A failing igniter or thermostat produces consistently cold air from early in the second cycle regardless of vent condition.

We check both on every call. They are not mutually exclusive — a machine can have a partially restricted vent and a failing igniter simultaneously, and we have seen it often enough that we do not assume a component fix alone is the complete answer without verifying airflow.

Why This Pattern Gets Misdiagnosed

The intermittent nature of first-cycle-only heating leads some technicians to the wrong conclusion. The machine heats when they test it on arrival. They run one cycle, see heat, and call the visit inconclusive. Or they replace the thermal fuse — because that is the most common no-heat cause — when the fuse is actually intact and the igniter or thermostat is the real fault.
