The Two Failure Patterns
Gradual Wear
The most common pattern is progressive wear — the roller material gradually thins over years of operation. As the roller loses diameter, the drum begins to wobble slightly, producing increasing noise and vibration. This is a slow process that may take several years before the symptom becomes impossible to ignore.
Flat Spotting from Disuse
The second pattern is more specific: when a dryer sits unused for an extended period, the drum rests in one position. The section of roller in contact with the drum bears the drum’s full static weight continuously, compressing and deforming at that point. When the machine runs again, that flat spot produces a rhythmic thump — once per drum revolution — from the very first cycle.

Why We Always Replace the Full Roller Set
When we find a worn or flat-spotted roller, we replace all four as a set — never just the damaged one. If one roller has failed, the others have experienced identical loading and identical operating hours. They are the same age on the same machine under the same conditions. Replacing one leaves three that are close to the same failure point. Replacing all four on one visit, while the machine is already open, adds minimal cost and prevents a callback within months.
What We Check While the Machine Is Open
With the machine disassembled for roller replacement, we inspect the drive belt, idler pulley bearing, drum glides, and rear drum bearing on every call. These components age alongside the rollers. Catching secondary wear on the same visit prevents a separate disassembly job within the year.
How Long Do Drum Rollers Last?
Under normal use with a clean vent system and moderate temperatures, drum rollers typically last eight to twelve years. They wear earlier on machines with restricted vents, on machines that run in hot laundry rooms without ventilation, and on machines that sit unused for extended periods in humid environments.
