Dryer Stopped Working Completely β Every Possible Cause, Explained
Before You Assume the Machine Is Dead β Check These First
A surprising number of “completely dead dryer” calls turn out to have causes that take two minutes to identify and cost nothing to fix. Always check these before anything else.
The Circuit Breaker
Electric dryers run on a dedicated 240-volt circuit that uses two separate 120-volt breakers wired together. Here is something most homeowners do not know: those two breakers can trip independently. When only one of the two trips, the dryer receives 120 volts instead of 240. The result is a machine that appears partially functional β the drum may rotate, the display may light up, the timer may run β but there is no heat and the machine may behave erratically. When both trip, the machine appears completely dead.
Go to your electrical panel. Find the dryer breaker β it should be a double-width breaker labeled “Dryer.” Push it firmly to the off position, then back to on. Do not just check whether it looks tripped β push it all the way off and reset it properly. Then test the dryer again.
If the breaker trips again immediately or within a few cycles, there is an electrical fault in the machine or the circuit that requires professional diagnosis. Do not keep resetting a breaker that trips repeatedly.
The Door Switch
Every residential dryer has a door switch β a small interlock that prevents the machine from running with the door open. When the door switch fails, the machine thinks the door is open at all times. The drum will not rotate. On many machines the display will still light up, but pressing start produces nothing. On others the machine appears completely unresponsive.
The door switch is one of the most commonly failed components on residential dryers, particularly on machines that have been in heavy use for five or more years. The switch is actuated mechanically every time the door opens and closes β on a busy household machine that runs daily, this is thousands of actuations per year.
To test informally: open the door and look for a small plunger or button in the door frame area. Press it with your finger while the door is open. You should hear or feel a click. If the switch feels mushy, does not click, or if pressing it by hand while attempting to start the machine produces no response, the switch is likely failed.
The Power Supply β Outlet and Cord
A dryer outlet that has developed a loose connection β at the terminal block where the cord connects to the machine, or at the outlet itself β can produce intermittent or complete power loss. If the machine worked fine and then simply stopped with no other explanation, a loose power connection is worth checking.
This is also a common finding on dryers that have been moved recently β in rental properties especially. Moving the machine can stress the power cord connection at the terminal block. On some older machines the cord-to-terminal block connection is a known wear point.

The Drive Belt
When the drive belt snaps, the motor continues to run but the drum does not move. On most machines you will hear the motor humming β or even running at full speed β but the drum is completely stationary. This is often misdiagnosed as a motor failure because the drum stops, but the distinguishing feature is that you can hear the motor running even though nothing rotates.
A belt failure is one of the more common complete-stop events on machines over eight years old, particularly those that have been running with a worn idler pulley β the additional drag on the belt from a failing pulley bearing accelerates belt wear and can cause premature snapping. If the machine was squealing intermittently in the weeks before it stopped, the belt and idler pulley are the primary suspects.
The Drive Motor
A completely failed drive motor produces no sound at all when you press start β no hum, no attempt to rotate, nothing. The motor is a more expensive repair than a belt or switch but is not typically a replacement-level expense on a machine that is otherwise in good condition. Motor failures are more common on machines that have been running hot from vent restriction β the motor works harder against the additional drag of a restricted system and experiences elevated thermal stress over time.
A motor that hums but does not rotate β rather than being completely silent β is a different failure pattern suggesting a failed start capacitor rather than a completely dead motor. The capacitor provides the initial torque kick that gets the motor spinning. A failed capacitor produces a motor that tries and fails rather than one that does nothing at all.
The Main Control Board
On modern electronic dryers β particularly Samsung, LG, and newer Whirlpool and Maytag models with digital controls β a failed main control board can produce a completely unresponsive machine. No display, no response to any button, nothing. Control board failures are more common on machines that have experienced power surges, sustained voltage fluctuations, or have been in environments with high humidity exposure to the electronics.
Control board replacement is one of the more expensive dryer repairs and is the point at which the 50% rule becomes most relevant. If a control board replacement on a ten-year-old machine costs more than half the cost of a comparable new machine, the conversation about replacement becomes a serious one rather than a reflexive one.
The Thermal Fuse β A Specific Pattern
On some dryer models β particularly certain Whirlpool and Maytag configurations β a blown thermal fuse does not just eliminate heat. It cuts power to the entire machine, producing a completely dead dryer with no display and no response. This is a specific wiring configuration that varies by model, and it catches homeowners off guard because the symptom looks like a total electrical failure rather than a safety fuse blow.
If the machine is a Whirlpool or Maytag that stopped completely without warning, the thermal fuse is worth testing early in the diagnostic sequence β it is a cheap and quick test that rules out a simple cause before more complex diagnosis begins.
The Complete Diagnostic Sequence β In Order
- Reset the circuit breaker β push firmly to off, then to on. Confirm the outlet is providing power.
- Test the door switch β check for physical actuation and a clear click. Inspect the door latch for damage that might prevent proper switch engagement.
- Listen for the motor β does pressing start produce any sound at all? A hum with no rotation points to belt or capacitor. Silence points to motor, control board, or power supply.
- Test the thermal fuse β particularly on Whirlpool and Maytag models where a blown fuse cuts all power. A multimeter test takes thirty seconds.
- Test the start switch β the start button itself can fail mechanically, particularly on machines with heavy use. A failed start switch produces no response to pressing start even with power confirmed at the machine.
- Assess the control board β if all upstream components test correctly and the machine remains completely unresponsive, the control board is the remaining suspect on electronic dryers.
When a Completely Dead Dryer Is Worth Repairing
The answer depends on what caused the failure and the overall condition of the machine.
A door switch, thermal fuse, capacitor, or belt β all inexpensive parts, straightforward repairs, well worth doing on any machine in otherwise good mechanical condition regardless of age.
A drive motor β a mid-range repair. Worth doing on machines under ten years old in otherwise good condition. On machines over twelve years old the conversation includes assessing overall wear on belts, rollers, and drum glides simultaneously.
A control board β an expensive repair on most electronic models. Apply the 50% rule honestly: if the board replacement plus any other identified wear components exceeds 50% of the replacement cost of a comparable new machine, and the machine is in its second decade, the replacement conversation is legitimate.
A dryer that stops completely is alarming but almost always diagnosable. The cause is almost always one specific failed component β not a machine that has simply reached the end of its life. Getting an honest diagnosis before a replacement decision is always worth the diagnostic fee. What to Tell the Technician When You Call
The more specific you can be, the faster the diagnosis goes and the more likely the technician arrives with the right part on the truck:
- Does pressing start produce any sound at all β hum, click, motor noise β or complete silence?
- Is the display lit or completely dark?
- Did the machine make any unusual sound β squeal, thump, grinding β in the days or weeks before it stopped?
- Did it stop suddenly or did it seem to deteriorate gradually?
- Has the circuit breaker been checked and reset?
- When was the machine last serviced professionally, if ever?
- What brand and model is it? This is on the sticker inside the door frame on most machines.
